1.4 Diffusion of Innovation & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifact: Individual Teacher Technology Assessment
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the Coaching Journal. I created the Coaching Journal during the spring of 2014 in ITEC 7460. The journal documented my experience coaching a colleague who had limited technology skills.
Standard 1.4, Diffusion of Innovations & Change states, “Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools.” This standard establishes the foundation for managing the change process in the school. In the Coaching Journal, I meet with the same teacher for five sessions. Under each session, I described the research-based strategies used when working with the teacher, the skill and affective changes that took place with the teacher, and my reflection on the challenges faced doing this process. Using the Partnership Approach, areas of strength and weakness were identified. I explained ways we could strengthen the weaker areas with the integration of technology. One weak area was the fact that few visuals were used during the lesson. Another weak area was that student work was not differentiated. Therefore, I showed her how to create webquest that could be used to differentiate student work.
The artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because for every meeting I had to research, recommend and implement strategies that I thought would be beneficial for the teacher. We worked together well during this process which demonstrates my ability to manage the change process within a school.
From completing the Coaching Journal, I learned how important every single person is in revolutionizing the culture of a school. Coaches cannot do their jobs without willing teachers. Everyone must work together for the betterment of the children. I understood this in theory before completing this assignment; nonetheless, completing this assignment really helped that concept to resonate with me. No one wants to work with someone who does not view him or her as equally intelligent. The act of coaching involves knowledge of the concept (technology in this case) and people skills. Both are equally important with coaching teachers.
The work that went into developing this artifact impacts staff development and student learning. Because I was able to provide the teacher with some technology skills that she could immediately use, she was able to increase the rigor in her classroom while getting the students to engage in the content at a deeper level. The Coaching Journal documented my experience coaching a teacher, but it also provided me with a tool that allowed me to reflect upon my skills as a coach. I have always been good with people, and never really thought of that as a skill until this assignment.
