Artifact: Diversity Blog Entry
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the Diversity Blog Entry. I created the Diversity Blog Entry during the fall of 2013 in ITEC 7430. The blog entry addresses the fact that the Internet can be used in the classroom to educate students about diverse cultures.
Standard 4.3, Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness states, “Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.” This standard addresses the need for the Internet to be used to build cultural awareness and understanding. In addition, the Internet offers an array of tools, such as free read aloud software, graphic visuals, and speech to text software that make a huge difference in the lives of SPED and ESL students. In the Diversity Blog Entry, I discuss how the Internet causes learning experiences to no longer be hindered due to time or location. Engaged Learning Projects, Virtual Tours, and Skype make communication and learning experiences abroad possible with a minimal cost.
From completing the Diversity Blog Entry, I think this must the most amazing time to be a teacher. Technology helps teachers connect their classes to the rest of the world. No longer do we have to teach about France through 20-year-old videos and photographs. Our students can actually Skype with a class in France and experience a virtual tour of the country’s attractions. No longer does a teacher have to administer every read aloud. She can insert selected text into a tool and the device will read the text aloud. The Internet provides us with tools to teach our students to value the beauty of difference.
The assignment directly impacted student learning by providing tools that encourage diversity within the classroom. During Hispanic Heritage Month, students learned about the Hispanic culture by viewing a virtual tour offered by the Smithsonian. Students viewed and listened to the history of a number of artifacts including masks and clothing from various locations throughout Mexico, Central and South America. This assignment caused student learning experiences to become more global because I became aware of the different tools available to support cultural understanding within the classroom.
