3.6 Selecting & Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project
Reflection: The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project. I created the Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project during the summer of 2013 in ITEC 7445. The project identifies and discusses the benefits of cloud commuting in the classroom. This was a presentation intended for administrators. My role in developing the project was from the perspective of Technology Coach.
Standard 3.6, Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources states, “Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure.” This standard establishes the importance of technologies being evaluated to fit the needs of the school. In the Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project, I evaluate cloud commuting for the classroom. Cloud commuting uses a network of remote servers to host the Internet servers instead of a local server. The benefits include cost savings, materials are automatically saved so work is never lost, and multiple users can work on one document at a time. The technology could be used for both teachers and students.
From completing the Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project, I learned how important it is to keep an open-mind when evaluating a technology. Oftentimes I feel people recognized the good qualities of an emerging technology, but overlook the challenges, practicality and relevance. It is important to keep both perspectives in mind when making a decision. Luckily, this technology was free for school to implement and compatible with existing technologies.
The work that went into developing this artifact could have impacted professional learning and student achievement. The use of it would have recolonized how we communicate digitally within our building. I was really excited about my findings and presented them to my administrator. He was a little hesitant to use them in the school. He does not know a lot about technology and was nervous about using the program.
