3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: Cherokee Elementary School Website
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the website of Cherokee Elementary School. Beginning the fall of 2013, the technical assistant, the librarian, and myself work together to keep the website current.
Standard 3.7, Communication & Collaboration states, “Candidates utilized digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.” This standard establishes the importance of technology being used to communicate with students, parents and colleagues. In the beginning of the year, our school did not have a school website. Only 8% of the previous year’s staff was rehired. My administrator assigned the technical assistant, the librarian and myself to improve the website. Together we have worked and created a very nice site in which communication with parents, staff, and the larger community takes place daily. Calendar of school events, the monthly parent letter, and pictures and videos of students and staff are examples of the information present on the website.
From completing the website, I learned how important it is to have good colleagues that value each others’ opinions and ideas. Also, I learned that websites are only as good as the their last update. In order for them to be considered a valuable tool, they must be updated often and kept current. The website could be improved by us allowing parents to submit forms and documents via the website.
The work that went into developing this artifact impacted school improvement. This impact was assessed in the parent surveys. Parents and community members are pleased that they are informed of what is going on at the school. The website became an excellent tool for communicating with parents, staff, and the greater community.
