6.3 Field Experiences
Candidates engage in appropriate field experiences to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these standards. (PSC 6.3)
Artifact: 1-hour Technology Worhshop Field Log
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the field experiences log that focuses on the research I performed to organize a 1-hour Technology Workshop. I created this field experience long during ITEC 7460, spring of 2014. This workshop introduced teachers to the features and capabilities of Edmodo. It walked the teachers through the process of creating an Edmodo account and ways to use the tool in the classroom. I presented this information to all faculty during PLC from the role of Technology Coach.
Standard 6.3, Field Experiences states, “Candidates engage in appropriate field experiences to synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these standards.” This standard addresses the importance of having hands-on opportunities to utilize the information learned in class. In the field experience log, I was able to document various sources researched to determine which site would be of most benefit to my staff. I selected Edmodo because it could be used between teacher-to-teacher, teacher-to-student, or student-to-student. Our school is weak in using digital tools for communication purposes.
From completing the field experience, I learned how time and energy goes into developing a professional development experience. To create one good solid hour of professional development, a person may spend 20 hours researching good sources. This experience provided me with a new found respect for the presenters of professional development sessions that I have participated in the past. The learning experience could be extended by a follow up professional development session being conducted in which various teachers share how they use Edmodo in their classrooms or present apps or resources they have been exposed to through the use of Edmodo.
The assignment directly impacted professional learning. It directly impacted my professional learning because it caused me to analyze material and determine what would be most beneficial to the staff. Engaging in hands-on learning experiences is foundational in becoming a good Technology Coach. The field experience log reflects the behavior that every good Technology Coach does instinctively. Continuous learning and and staying abreast of current trends in the field is necessary in order to be a source of benefit to any staff.
