Artifact: Technology Workshop
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the Technology Workshop. I created the Technology Workshop during the spring of 2014 in ITEC 7460. The workshop was on Edmodo and explains all of the different features and uses of Edmodo. The presentation was directed to all faculty during PLC.
Standard 5.2, Professional Learning states, “Candidates develop and implement technology-based professional learning that aligns to state and national professional learning standards, integrates components, models principles of adult learning, and promotes best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment.” This standard addresses the need for technology-based professional development. In the Technology Workshop, teachers are introduced to Edmodo, viewed a video on the capabilities of Edmodo which supports the fact that adult learners like relevant information. Then, teachers established an account, observed a Screencast that walked them through the specific steps of “how-to” create quizzes, polls, and small groups. Next, teachers explored the various ways Edmodo can be used to implement lessons into their classrooms. Finally, teachers learned how to use Edmodo to find other apps and resources that align to the standards. After the presentation, teachers completed an evaluation detailing the insight they gained from the experience.
From completing the Technology Workshop, I learned how a few technology tools used properly can enhance a traditional learning experience drastically. Our administrator mandated an increase in the use of technology tools this school year. Our school had the highest gains out of the entire district on the state assessment. Edmodo provides tools for teachers and students. Used properly and consistently, it can compliment the culture of any classroom. The goal of technology use is for it to become a natural part of what we do in our classroom’s culture because it enhances how students interact with the curriculum.
The assignment directly impacted professional learning and student achievement. It impacted personal learning by providing teachers with information about a tool that would enrich the learning experiences of their students. It impacted student achievement by offering students different ways to engage in the content. Teachers can also use Edmodo to do a quick informal assessment. The responses she receives can provide her with feedback on how she should proceed with her lesson. The needs of students and teachers can be met with the use of this tool.
