2.1 Content Standards & Student Technology Standards
Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards. (PSC 2.1/ISTE 2a)
Artifact: Multimedia Design Project
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the Multimedia Design Project. I created the Multimedia Design Project during the summer of 2013 in ITEC 7445. The project is a webquest about volcanoes. It is designed for a 5th grade science class.
Standard 2.1, Content Standards & Student Technology Standards states, “Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards.” This standard establishes the importance of content being technology enhanced and standard focused. In the Multimedia Design Project, I use the 5th grade science standards to enhance a learning experience about volcanoes. Students complete assignments from the perspective of a scientific research trying to determine the causes of the increase of volcanic activity in a particular part of the world.
The webquest was created through Weebly. Students could access the site through the Internet by typing in the site address. The webquest contained links to articles, maps, and other interactive resources. Students used the resources on the webquest to answer the guiding questions that were asked. Students completed the assignment in trios or pairs. The final product was a multimedia presentation detailing their findings.
From completing the Mulitmedia Design Project, I learned how much fun technology can be in the classroom. Before this assignment, I did not know how to create my own webquest. I felt so empowered after this assignment! I taught so many people how to create webquest because I was extremely excited about it. Before this assignment I never viewed myself as being a “techie”. In reflecting, this was the turning point of me evolving into the technology enhanced lesson planner I am now.
The work that went into developing this artifact impacts staff development and student achievement. Students were able to use the webquest when they studied volcanoes which made the learning experience more engaging. However, the skills that I learned to develop the webquest helped me to help so many of my colleagues. I have informally taught them how to create their own webquest. Formally, I have presented how to use Weebly to create webquest at ESL professional development offered by our district. Prior to the creation of this assignment, most of the teachers I know were only using webquest that were already created on the Internet.
