4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
Artifact: Internet Safety Blog Entry
Reflection:
The artifact that I have decided to use for this standard is the Internet Safety Blog Entry. I created the Equitable Access Blog Entry during the fall of 2013 in ITEC 7430. The blog entry addresses the issue of Internet safety for children. The entry provides some ideas for teachers to provide Internet safety behaviors in the classroom.
Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use states, “Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies.” This standard acknowledges the need for Internet safety to be taught to students. In the Internet Saftey Blog Entry, several ideas are offered concerning ways teachers can monitor the Internet use of students. Teachers can create webquests so that students are using Internet resources that have been pre-selected. Also, student friendly sites such as Edmodo and Twinducate are great to use as well.
From completing the Internet Safety Blog Entry, I learned the importance of making students aware of Internet danger and teaching them how to use the Internet responsibly.
We do not want to cause students to “fear” the Internet. Internet uses are becoming a tool of everyday life. Nonetheless, we want to make students aware of the dangers and provide them with behaviors that they can use to insure they remain safe while using the Internet.
The assignment directly impacted student learning and professional development for teachers. After completing the assignment, I had a brief discussion with my administrator and he allowed me to present a brief presentation to colleagues during faculty meeting. The presentation reminded colleagues of the dangers of the Internet and I provided them with some sites they could reference when teaching students how to use the Internet responsibly. The assignment impacted student learning because more teachers began to use webquests when allowing the students to research information on the Internet. The webquest allowed the teachers to choose the sites beforehand. It helped prevent the students from having to search through vast amounts of information. The webquest saved time as well as provided Internet access in a controlled environment.
